Premature Neonate with Abdominal Distension and Blood in Stool

A 5-day-old premature neonate developed progressive abdominal distension and blood in stool after institution of oral feeding. He was septic on general examination, and the abdomen was distended and hyper-resonant on percussion. Bowel sounds were sluggish on auscultation.

Laboratory investigations showed raised white cell count and C-reactive protein. Blood culture grew Gram-negative organism.
