This image is from a 21-year-old shop assistant. Her legs have been swollen since she was 14 years old and have slowly become slightly worse, although entirely painless, until they have reached their present size.
She is otherwise very fit, but is now very bothered by the appearance of her legs, especially the more swollen left one. She usually wears trousers or jeans and feels too embarrassed to wear a bathing costume on holiday. Her periods are normal and regular; they commenced just about the time that her leg swelling first appeared.
She has never been ill. Her parents and her two sisters are well and have no problems with their legs – nor, as far as her mother knows, have any of her other relations.
What’s the diagnosis ?
